Cazin - Tržac

Tržac is a settlement in the area of the City of Cazin, located by the Korana River, at the point where the Mutnica River flows into it. Above this confluence, on a high rock, are the remains of the Old Town of Tržac, a medieval fortress that played an important role in the border area over the centuries. Tržac is historically particularly connected to the noble family Frankopan, one branch of which was named Frankopani Tržački after this town. Since 1323, the area has been in their possession, while the fortress later became part of the Ottoman border system and was included in the Bihać Captaincy. During the 18th century, it had a significant military garrison and several cannons, while its walls had already been significantly damaged by the mid-19th century. Today, the remains of the former fortification are preserved, and the position of the fortress on the elevation above the confluence offers a view of the Korana, Mutnica, and the surrounding Krajina landscape. The combination of rivers, green hills, and the remains of the medieval and Ottoman fortress makes Tržac an interesting site for exploring the lesser-known history of the Cazin region.
