Velika Kladuša, located in the far northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a city with a rich and layered history shaped by the meeting of different cultures, states, and historical periods. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, and the first known written mention of Velika Kladuša dates back to October 30, 1280, when the place was referred to as Cladosa. Throughout the Middle Ages, this region was governed by various noble families, while the fortified Old Town of Kladuša played an important role in protecting and controlling this border area. The historical heritage of Velika Kladuša is reflected today in the remnants of the Old Town of Kladuša, as well as in other fortifications in the municipality, such as Podzvizd, Todorovo, and Vrnograč. The Ottoman era also left a significant mark, after which a characteristic Krajina culture and way of life developed. In the urban area, there is also the City Mosque, built in 1901, which, along with its courtyard, fountain, and gravestones, has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Velika Kladuša is also known for its strong economic development during the second half of the 20th century, particularly through the development of Agrokomerc, which became one of the most significant economic systems in this region during the 1970s and 1980s. Today, the city preserves a blend of historical heritage, traditional Krajina architecture, rural landscapes, and modern life, while its location near the border with Croatia further emphasizes its historical and geographical significance. Velika Kladuša represents an interesting starting point for exploring the northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Cazin region.
