The White Tabija is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Sarajevo, located at the most prominent part of Vratnik, at the eastern entrance to the old part of the city. This stone fortress, built on the site of a medieval stronghold, is part of the former defensive wall of the old town of Vratnik and today represents one of the symbols of Sarajevo. The fortress has an irregular polygon shape with towers, and over the centuries it has been built and expanded by various rulers, leaving layers of medieval, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian architecture. According to tradition, it got its name from the white stone and lime with which it was once painted. The greatest charm of the White Tabija today is the fascinating view that its walls offer of the entire Sarajevo – the historical city center, the valley of the Miljacka River, and the surrounding mountains. The fortress can be reached by a leisurely walk from Baščaršija, past the Kovači cemetery and through the old Vratnik, or by public transport. An ideal place for all lovers of history, photography, and unforgettable city panoramas.
