The Franciscan monastery and the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary represent one of the most important spiritual and cultural-historical sites in Široki Brijeg and Herzegovina. The foundation stone of the original church and monastery was laid on July 23, 1846, marking the beginning of the construction of an important Franciscan center in this part of Herzegovina. The present church was built in the early 20th century on the site of an older church, characterized by its recognizable Romanesque architecture, massive stone walls, and two bell towers. The construction lasted for several decades, and the church achieved its final appearance through a series of construction and decoration phases. The monastery and church have been connected for centuries with the activities of the Franciscans, who played an important role in the religious, educational, and cultural life of Herzegovina. Today, the complex represents a recognizable symbol of Široki Brijeg. A special place is held by the statue of Our Lady of Široki Brijeg, as well as the Franciscan museum and gallery, which further enrich the cultural value of this location. Situated on a hill above the town, the complex also offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape and is an essential location for visitors who wish to learn about the history, culture, and spiritual heritage of Široki Brijeg.
