Križ na Križevcu – Međugorje
The monumental cross at the top of Križevac is one of the most recognizable symbols of Medjugorje and an important place of prayer for numerous pilgrims. It was erected in 1934, in commemoration of the 1900th anniversary of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, on what was then called Mount Šipovac. The construction was initiated by the parishioners of Medjugorje, led by the then parish priest Fra Bernardin Smoljan, and the entire cross was built in just 52 days. The cross is about 8.5 meters tall, and in its intersection are embedded relics of the cross of Jesus brought from Rome for this occasion. The solemn blessing took place on March 16, 1934, when Mount Šipovac received its new name – Križevac. Today, the cross on Križevac is the central point of the traditional ascent and prayer of the Stations of the Cross. Its position at the top of the rocky Herzegovinian hill, above Medjugorje, provides a powerful visual experience and represents a symbol of faith, hope, and pilgrimage.
