Pećina - Gata
In the area of Velika Gate, on the edge of the karst plateau between the Toplica valley and the Bihać region, lies Velika Pećina, one of the more interesting natural phenomena of this area. The cave belongs to a region rich in underground and surface waters, where numerous springs of a cave character emerge and form small streams that flow towards Toplica. Velika Pećina is particularly interesting due to its connection with the lives of the people who have lived here for generations. According to old records and testimonies from locals, the water that flowed from the cave once powered as many as seven mills. At a time when mills were an important part of daily life, the power of the water represented a natural source of energy and one of the reasons why this area was significant for the local population. Due to the challenging terrain and underground conditions, Velika Pećina is not arranged as a classic tourist cave, and its detailed exploration requires appropriate speleological equipment and experience. Thus, Velika Pećina represents a blend of nature, water, and local history – a place where one can see how the karst relief has shaped the lives of people in Gata. For visitors who wish to discover lesser-known natural attractions of the Bihać area, this is an interesting stop off the usual tourist routes. Note: The cave is not arranged for classic tourist visits. Entering the deeper parts should be left to experienced speleologists with appropriate equipment.
