Stari grad Gradačac

tourist attraction in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

    Region: Northeast Bosnia — Majevica

The old town of Gradačac, with its distinctive Husein-Captain Gradaščević Tower, is one of the most significant and beautiful historical buildings in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a symbol of the town of Gradačac. The fortress rises on a hill above the town, dominating the surroundings, and represents a true gem of northeastern Bosnia. The entire complex is surrounded by strong ramparts and is divided into the Lower and Upper Town, with certain parts of the walls built from carefully carved stone. The fortress acquired its present appearance in the 18th and early 19th centuries, during the time of the powerful Gradačac captains from the Gradaščević family. It is most famous for the Husein-Captain Gradaščević Tower – the Dragon of Bosnia, one of the most prominent figures in Bosnian history, who fought for the autonomy of Bosnia. Within the complex, there is also a clock tower 22 meters high, built in 1824, and the youngest stone clock tower from the Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina. From the top of the tower, which today houses a restaurant, there is a beautiful view of the entire Gradačac and its surroundings. An unmissable destination for all history lovers.
