Stari grad Ključ
tourist attraction in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Region: Northwest Bosnia — Sana Valley
The Old Town of Ključ is one of the most significant and fortified towns of the medieval Bosnian state, located on steep cliffs above the left bank of the Sana River. With its towers atop high cliffs, it irresistibly resembles fairy tale castles, and ancient stories and mysteries make it a place where history becomes close and exciting. It is first mentioned in the 14th century when it belonged to the powerful noble family of Hrvatinić. Ključ is remembered as the last refuge of the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević, who sought protection among these walls in 1463 while fleeing from the Ottoman army. The last episode of the medieval Bosnian state also took place under the ancient town. The fortress consists of three parts – the town with its suburb, the Tabor, and the prominent tower of Ljubica, which overlooks the entire complex. During the Ottoman rule, Ključ was the seat of a nahija, a kadiluk, and a captaincy. Today, the Old Town and its towers are arranged for visitors, with paths, benches, and lighting, and from the ramparts, there is a magnificent view of the Sana valley. The entire site is surrounded by a pine forest, making it ideal for relaxation and sightseeing.
