Stari grad Ostrovica

tourist attraction in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Region: Northwest Bosnia — Una Valley

The Old Town of Ostrovica is a large medieval fortress located on a steep hill above the left bank of the upper flow of the Una River, near Kulen Vakuf. From the cliffs of Ostrovica, a breathtaking view unfolds – the Una winds below the town surrounded by dense green forest, while in the distance, Kulen Vakuf can be seen. The fortress was likely built in the 15th century, on foundations that date back to ancient times, at a strategic location that controlled the valley and important trade routes to Dalmatia. It came under Ottoman rule in 1523, after which it was significantly expanded and strengthened, with walls up to ten meters high, four towers, and two bastions. It became the seat of the Captaincy of Stara Ostrovica, which was long governed by members of the famous Kulenović family. A special charm is given to Ostrovica by the legend of brave women who, according to popular tradition, donned armor and defended the town side by side with men, which is why they were called the Amazon women of Ostrovica. Today, although partially in ruins, Ostrovica clearly reveals its former strength and layout, making it an unmissable stop for lovers of history, photography, and active recreation in the heart of the Una National Park.
