The Old Town of Travnik, locally known as Kastel, is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval fortified structures in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fortress rises above the city itself, on a rocky slope, and represents a symbol of Travnik – the former city of the viziers where Ottoman rule lasted for more than a century and a half. It was built in the Middle Ages, during the time of the Bosnian kings, and was later expanded and modified by Ottoman builders. The path to the fortress is a true time travel through the old neighborhoods with characteristic Bosnian houses, and at the very entrance, you are greeted by a stone bridge and a wooden gate. From the walls, there is a beautiful view of the entire Travnik – colorful rooftops, numerous minarets, and the green valley of the Lašva River. Inside the fortress, there are exhibition spaces and museum displays that depict life as it once was, and today the Old Town is also a venue for numerous cultural events. Not far away is the famous spring Plava voda, ideal for a break after the tour. An unmissable stop for all who visit the heart of Bosnia.
