Stari most u Mostaru

tourist attraction in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Region: South Bosnia (Herzegovina) — Neretva Valley

The Old Bridge in Mostar is one of the most recognizable symbols of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a masterpiece of Ottoman architectural art. This elegant stone bridge with a beautiful arch spans the emerald Neretva River, connecting the two banks of the old city core. It was built in the 16th century, during the time of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and the city of Mostar got its name from the "mostari," the guardians of the bridge. The bridge was destroyed in 1993 during the war, and then faithfully reconstructed using original methods and materials, reopening in 2004, becoming a strong symbol of reconciliation and coexistence. With its arch rising high above the river, surrounded by stone towers, cobbled streets of the old town, and numerous craft shops, the Old Bridge takes the breath away from every visitor. Its charm is further enhanced by the traditional jumps into the cold Neretva, which gather the bravest jumpers every summer. The Old Bridge and the old town core of Mostar are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and represent an essential destination for any journey through Herzegovina.
