Tvrđava Kastel
tourist attraction in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Region: Northwest Bosnia — Vrbas Valley
The Kastel is the largest fortress and the oldest monument in Banja Luka, located in the very center of the city, on the left bank of the emerald Vrbas River, near the confluence of the Crkvena stream. This impressive stone fortress is the stone heart of the city and one of its main attractions. Life has existed here since ancient times – traces of settlements from prehistoric times have been found, as well as remains from the Roman period, when an important trade route passed through here. Over the centuries, the fortress served as a strong military stronghold that protected the Vrbas valley, and it acquired its present appearance, with walls, bastions, and towers, largely during the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods. Today, the Kastel is a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city – a place for walking, socializing, and photography, with a gallery, restaurant, and children's playground within its walls. During the summer, the fortress comes alive with numerous concerts and festivals. Entrance is free, and the Vrbas River, one of the most popular rivers for rafting in Bosnia and Herzegovina, flows right next to the fortress. An unmissable point for every visitor to Banja Luka.
