The Pilgrims’ Stone in Bužim is a unique tradition of the Krajina region. At the foot of the Old Town stands the old wooden mosque, a spiritual center for centuries. Although its exact construction date is unknown, a preserved 1838 endowment deed records its renovation by Mehmed Vedžihi-pasha. Surrounding the mosque are tombstones of former imams and respected community members. In front of it lie stones engraved with the names of pilgrims. Before leaving for Mecca, a pilgrim would stand on the stone bearing his name, mount his horse, and begin the journey. In this way, the day and place of departure were forever marked. The custom existed from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century.
