The Old Town of Blagaj, also known as Stjepan-grad, is one of the most impressive and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Herzegovina, located on top of a steep karst rock above the spring of the Buna River, not far from Mostar. It is named after Duke Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, one of the most powerful nobles of this region, after whose title the entire region was named Herzegovina. Life has existed in this place since the Iron Age, and the fortress, with its crenellated walls and tall towers, bears witness to centuries of turbulent and rich history. A well-maintained walking path leads to the fortress, and although a little effort is required for the ascent, the effort is rewarded with a fascinating view of Blagaj, the emerald Buna River, and the Neretva Valley that opens up like a postcard. At the foot of the fortress, there are other attractions – the impressive spring of Buna, one of the largest springs in Europe, and the famous Blagaj Tekke. The Old Town of Blagaj is today a national monument and an essential stop for every visitor to Herzegovina.
