Stari grad Tešanj

tourist attraction in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Region: Central Bosnia — Bosna Valley

The Old Town of Tešanj, also known as Gradina, is one of the largest and most impressive fortresses in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located on top of a rocky hill above the Tešanjka River. The fortress dominates the town and is situated in the very center of the old bazaar, which gives it a special charm and makes it easily accessible to visitors. Life has been thriving in this place for three thousand years – from the Illyrian fort, through the Roman stronghold, to the medieval and Ottoman fortress whose layers can still be recognized in its walls and towers today. Within the restored towers, there are several museum exhibits that depict the rich history of the Tešanj area, and from the walls, there is a beautiful panoramic view of the town and the surrounding valley. The Old Town is now arranged and open for visits, and it often serves as a venue for cultural events and festivals. At the foot of the fortress, in the bazaar, there are other landmarks such as the clock tower and the old mosque. An unmissable destination for all who wish to explore the cultural and historical heritage of central Bosnia.
